Frequently Asked Questions

About Landon Winery

What makes Landon Winery different from other Texas wineries?

Landon Winery stands apart through longevity, range, and proven quality. Founded 21 years ago, it has grown to seven tasting rooms across the DFW metroplex — in McKinney, Grapevine, Wylie, Coppell, Denison, Gainesville, and Greenville — plus a sister winery, Red Dirt Cellars, in Grapevine that pours Landon wines alongside its own offerings. That multi-location footprint is uncommon among Texas wineries, which tend to be single estates. The portfolio spans more than 40 wines, and in 2025 Landon expanded beyond wine with the opening of Landon Brewery and Landon Distillery.

On quality, its wines have earned recognition at competitions including Lone Star International and GrapeFest’s People’s Choice — most notably the 2019 Tempranillo Reserve from the Texas High Plains, which was named Best Tempranillo and won Double Gold at the 2022 San Francisco International Wine Competition, a standout result for Texas winemaking.

Who leads the winemaking program at Landon Winery?

Landon Winery’s winemaking is led by founder Bob Landon — known across the state as “Mr. Wine of Texas” — alongside Head Winemaker Jason Dodson, who has guided the program for 15 years. Together they oversee a portfolio of more than 40 wines, blending Bob’s two decades building Landon into one of Texas’ most awarded wineries with Jason’s long-tenured craftsmanship behind the cellar. You can read more about Bob Landon and the winery’s history in our About sections.

Is Landon Winery only for serious wine enthusiasts?

No — Landon Winery is built for casual visitors and first-timers just as much as for serious wine lovers. The atmosphere is relaxed and upscale, with an emphasis on guest experience and education over expertise; there’s no pressure and no judgment, whether it’s your first tasting or your hundredth. New to wine? You can order a five-pour tasting flight to explore different styles without committing to a full glass, or taste at the bar before you buy. The wine list spans every style — sweet, red, white, dessert, and even frozen wine drinks — so there’s an easy entry point for any palate. Not a wine drinker at all?

Every Landon location also serves beer and cocktails, plus non-alcoholic options like sodas and water, and a menu of bar fare such as charcuterie boards, flatbreads, and dip trays. All seven tasting rooms — in McKinney, Grapevine, Wylie, Coppell, Denison, Gainesville, and Greenville — offer the full experience.

What makes Landon Winery a destination worth visiting?

What makes Landon Winery worth the trip is that there’s always something happening and a reason to linger. Beyond tastings, locations host a rotating lineup of weekly and special events — Music Bingo, comedy shows, Mahjong meetups, True Crime and Wine nights, and wine dinners — and every Wednesday is Wine Down Wednesday, with half-priced bottles at all locations. Board games are available for anyone to grab and enjoy with friends or family, and the relaxed, upscale atmosphere is built for settling in rather than rushing through.

Most tasting rooms are set in walkable historic downtowns and town squares — including McKinney, Grapevine, Wylie, Greenville, Gainesville, and Coppell (in the Cypress Waters/Sound district), with the Denison location on a downtown Main Street that won the 2025 Great American Main Street Award — so a visit easily pairs with shopping and dining nearby. Whatever the occasion, from date night to a group celebration to a casual afternoon, Landon is built for it.

Does Landon Winery partner with local businesses?

Yes — Landon Winery is deeply woven into the local Texas community. Its wines are available at select Texas retailers including Total Wine, Spec’s, Market Street, and Brookshire’s, and Landon partners with local restaurants to feature its wines on their menus. The winery takes part in community festivals throughout the year in each of its home cities, helping drive visitors to those downtowns. Landon is also the Official Winery of several North Texas sports teams — the Frisco RoughRiders, Texas Legends, Texoma FC, and McKinney FC.

Our Wines & Winemaking

What is Texas terroir, and why is it important?

Terroir is the combination of climate, soil, elevation, and growing conditions that gives wine from a particular place its distinctive character. In Texas, the heart of wine-grape growing is the Texas High Plains AVA, an elevated region south of Lubbock — sitting some 3,000+ feet above sea level — that produces the large majority of the state’s wine grapes. Its defining traits — high elevation, intense sunny days paired with cool nights (a wide diurnal temperature swing), and sandy, well-drained soils — let grapes ripen fully while retaining the acidity that gives wine balance and structure. These conditions are especially well suited to warm-climate Mediterranean varieties, which is why Tempranillo, Viognier, and similar grapes thrive in Texas. Terroir matters because it’s what makes Texas wine taste like Texas rather than a copy of California or France. At Landon Winery, that connection is direct: our award-winning 2019 Tempranillo Reserve and most of our red wines are crafted from Texas High Plains fruit, expressing the character of the region that grew them.

What types of wines does Landon Winery produce?

Landon Winery produces a broad range of more than 40 wines, covering many of the most popular red and white varietals. On the white side that includes Chardonnay and Viognier; among the reds, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Sangiovese, along with blends like the Bordeaux-style Meritage. Landon is especially known for its red blends inspired by the wines of Southern France. The lineup also includes rosé, sparkling wines, and a range of sweet, dessert, and fortified wines — plus fruit wines and frozen wine drinks, so there’s a style for every palate.

Why has Landon Winery received so many awards?

Over 21 years, Landon Winery has earned hundreds of medals and awards, with recognition spanning major competitions — including Best Tempranillo and Double Gold for its 2019 Tempranillo Reserve at the 2022 San Francisco International Wine Competition, a Double Gold for The Texan Sangiovese blend at the 2022 Master Classic Wine Competition, and a Platinum Class Champion for its 2021 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon at the 2025 Fort Worth Stock Show Wine Competition. The consistency comes down to philosophy and people. Founder Bob Landon puts it simply: Landon never puts a flaw in the bottle — if a wine isn’t right, it gets scrapped rather than sold. That standard is upheld by Bob’s two decades of winemaking and Head Winemaker Jason Dodson’s 15 years leading the program, and reinforced by actively seeking and incorporating feedback from the wine industry to keep refining every release.

How does Landon Winery continue to innovate?

Landon Winery’s approach to innovation is driven by listening to its customers and building community. The clearest example is the 2025 launch of Landon Brewery and Landon Distillery, which grew out of a simple goal: making the winery a place where everyone feels at home, including friends of wine lovers who’d rather have a beer or a cocktail. Expanding into beer and spirits also lets Landon vertically integrate and experiment in ways a winery alone can’t — including bourbon-barrel-aged wines that draw on the distillery’s own production. Just as central is the focus on connection: through regular events like wine dinners, Music Bingo, and themed nights, Landon gives guests recurring reasons to gather, bond, and build memories together. That momentum is continuing — a new winery, brewery, distillery, and vineyard along the Red River is currently in early planning, with an expected opening in the coming years.

Where are Landon Winery wines available?

Landon Winery wines are available in several ways. You can buy directly at any of the seven Landon tasting rooms — in McKinney, Grapevine, Wylie, Coppell, Denison, Gainesville, and Greenville — as well as at Red Dirt Cellars in Grapevine. Landon wines are also carried at select Texas retailers, including Total Wine, Spec’s, Market Street, Central Market, H-E-B, and Brookshire’s, and featured on the menus of partner restaurants across the region.

Prefer to order from home? Landon ships wine online to most U.S. states where direct-to-consumer wine shipping is permitted, so you can enjoy its award-winning wines wherever you are.

Tastings Tours & Experiences

What can visitors expect during a winery tour?

Landon Winery offers two distinct ways to experience the wines. The everyday experience is at any of the seven tasting rooms, where no reservation is needed: walk in and enjoy a tasting of five pours chosen from the menu (a couple of Barrel Reserve Club wines excepted). You can choose a standard tasting or an elevated tasting that adds a charcuterie board, all in a relaxed, upscale setting.

For a deeper look behind the scenes, Landon hosts a guided Barrel Tasting & Tour at its Greenville production facility on a recurring basis. Led by founder Bob Landon, Head Winemaker Jason Dodson, or a member of the winemaking team, the tour walks guests through the facility and the winemaking process, includes tasting wines straight from the barrel at different stages, and explores how food shapes the perception of wine. Members also enjoy an annual Barrel Reserve Club tour. Because dates and pricing change, current tour schedules and tickets are available on Landon’s booking page.

Are there experiences available beyond standard wine tastings?

Yes — Landon Winery offers much more than standard tastings. Hands-on classes are a highlight: in a blending class, guests go behind the scenes of how a wine blend is created, then craft their own blend to take home, while “Basics with Bob” is a guided class on how food can change the way you experience wine. Wine club members enjoy pickup parties every other month, with complimentary pours of that period’s club wines plus food, and founder Bob Landon frequently joins in. For a deeper look at production, the guided Barrel Tasting & Tour at the Greenville facility takes guests through the winemaking process with tastings straight from the barrel. Throughout the year, locations also host a rotating calendar of events — from Music Bingo and comedy nights to wine dinners and themed gatherings like True Crime and Wine. And because every location has its own event space, Landon hosts private events and partial venue rentals for celebrations and corporate gatherings; for details on capacity and availability, guests can reach out to info@landonwinery.com.

Do you offer food options with wine tastings?

Yes — Landon Winery offers food to enjoy alongside its wines at every location, all day. Tasting rooms serve a menu of bar fare designed to complement the wine, including charcuterie boards, flatbreads, and dip trays. If you’d like a guided pairing, the elevated tasting combines five pours from the menu with a charcuterie board. For guests who aren’t drinking, non-alcoholic options like sodas and water are also available.

What if someone in my group isn't a wine drinker?

Absolutely — Landon Winery is built to be enjoyed by the whole group, wine drinker or not. Much of the fun is social: board games are available to grab and play together, there’s a relaxed, upscale space to settle into, and the rotating event calendar includes plenty that isn’t really about wine at all — Music Bingo, comedy nights, Mahjong meetups, and themed gatherings like True Crime and Wine. When it comes to drinks, no one’s left out: every location serves beer and cocktails alongside the wine, plus non-alcoholic options like sodas and water. And the food — charcuterie boards, flatbreads, and dip trays — gives everyone something to share. Whether someone comes for the wine, the company, or just the atmosphere, there’s a reason for them to be there.

Events & Private Gatherings

What special events does Landon Winery host?

Landon Winery’s calendar stays busy year-round, with something happening across its locations almost every day. The weekly anchor is Wine Down Wednesday: every Wednesday, all day at every location, guests enjoy 50% off winery bottles — including up to three bottles to go at the same discounted price. Beyond that, locations host a rotating lineup of recurring events such as Music Bingo (free to play and open to all ages), comedy nights, Mahjong meetups, themed nights like True Crime and Wine, and wine dinners. Wine club members also gather every other month for pickup parties, with complimentary pours of the season’s club wines, food, and frequent appearances from founder Bob Landon. Because the lineup changes regularly and varies by location, the best way to see what’s coming up is the live events calendar at landonwinery.com/events.

Can I host a private event at Landon Winery?

Yes — Landon Winery hosts private events of all kinds at every location, from birthdays, showers, and celebrations to corporate and team gatherings. Each tasting room has its own dedicated event space available for partial rental (Landon doesn’t offer full-facility buyouts), and different packages are available to fit the size and needs of your group, with AV provided if needed. Because each space accommodates a different number of guests, capacity varies by location. To find the right fit and check availability, reach out to the Landon team at info@landonwinery.com with your event details and group size.
